Success Brings Smiles to Parents Learning at Oakland International High School’s ACE Learning Center
By Martha Sessums and Guest Bloggers Ms. Aiesha and Ms. Wendy
Oakland International High School (OIHS) is dedicated to helping support recently arrived immigrants students academically, socially, and emotionally – including their parents.
At the ACE College and Career Learning Center, students’ families are supported in their acquisition of English and technology skills. These are parents who have come to the US to participate in the freedom and opportunities offered by America, but often have had severe interruptions in their own education because of war, poverty, or ethnic conflict in their home countries. Continuing education is a real need for them.
Here’s an update and some photos of parents as they learn and proudly show off their success.

The Friday computer class is coming along great — we had all the computers busy, the students felt proud of their accomplishment — we printed their first typed work, thanks to
Ms. Wendy.
The options for listening to Rosetta Stone, Oxford Picture Dictionary and “Learning English with Jennifer” — gives them enough variety. We also do “Typing Club” to work on their typing skills.
