Oakland International High School Practices Writing Poetry During “Poetry Week”
By Xavier Meza, Oakland International High School After School Tutoring Coordinator
2017 After-school Poetry Week – On the week of April 10th, Oakland International High School students in the Refugee Transitions after-school tutoring program participated in their first annual “Poetry Week”! Students learned and practiced poetry-writing throughout the week in anticipation for the Poetry Contest on April 13th. Here are a just few samples of the activities that took place:
Motivational Quotations: Students formed into small groups and discussed pictures with motivational quotations, and then wrote their own motivational quotations.
Mad Lib Poetry. Each student glued one word anywhere on the blank spaces to create some fun (and funny) collective poetry! (one poem reads: “ If I was a walking flower I would fly with sugar in order to create honey.” ).
Haiku Day! Students learned the art of Haiku writing!
Then on the last day of tutoring that week, students were asked to write their own poems. The theme? Technology! A ceremony for the winners is scheduled on 5/2.
