Alpha Parent Learning Center Partners with Free Legal Services to Help Parents Know Their Rights
By Karen Martinez, Alpha Parent Learning Center Manager
This year, our Alpha Parent Center has held two parent meetings on immigration to provide free legal service, support and training to help members know their rights. We also partnered with the following organizations to provide other free services to our members:
Katharine & George Alexander Community Law Center (Santa Clara University)
This Law Center is where Cindy Avitia did pro bono legal work. Avitia was the San Jose community lawyer and volunteer who was the inspiration for Cindy Avitia High School in the Alpha Public Schools.
Los Amigos de Guadalupe
This organization provides our families with free family therapy twice a week each Monday and Wednesday from 12:30-2pm. It also provides rental assistance for families unable to pay rent, including move-in assistance that consists of first, last and deposit payments.
School Health Clinics
This group offers free medical insurance to any undocumented family through the Parent Center, along with enrollment into statement medical services.
Parent/Student Trainings
Of course, we have Parent Leadership Training classes (in addition to English as a Second Language classes) that consists of many topics that will help parents support their children (Alpha students) to go to and complete college. Classes run from 3/23/18 – 5/31/18, three times per month from 5-8:30pm.
In addition, we are working on preparing a Cal Poly campus tour during the month of April or May. We expect an estimate of 50-60 families to attend Cal Poly field trip. In fact, all the Alpha Schools will be a part of this field trip. Stay tuned for the confirmed Cal Poly date.
Second Harvest Food Bank
And last, but not least, here is a video of the Alpha Parent Center partnering with Second Harvest Food Bank to provide food for the community. Because the Alpha Parent Center is an ACE Learning Center, it can sponsor Second Harvest at Cindy Avitia High School. As you can see, it is very popular. Practice your Spanish and watch it.
